Hypermobility refers to an extreme elasticity in the ligaments and/or tissues of a joint. Dancers who have hypermobile joints might find it easy to stretch into positions that many other dancers find challenging. They might be seen as amazingly “flexible.” However, flexibility is about having elasticity in the muscles, not the ligaments.
It is important to notice if a young dancer has hypermobile joints, so that they can care for them properly. They might need to do extra strengthening work to stabilise the loose joints to avoid injury or discomfort.
