The count down is on - 5 day until New Zealand Dance Week (NZDW) launches!

NZDW is an annual event that coincides with International Dance Day, 29th April. The week is organised by DANZ (Dance Aotearoa New Zealand) and is designed to elevate the presence of dance in New Zealand. NZDW is all about participation, getting dancers and non-dancers involved in dance and celebrating the talent of dancers/choreographers in our community and nation.

So, how are you going to participate in NZDW? Whether you're a dancer or non-dancer there are lots of ways to get involved. I'm going to highlight some of the local events and also some of the events I'm REALLY excited about.

1. Dance-o-Mat and Parris Goebel

Yup, I'm pretty excited to be heading up to Auckland this week for the official launch of NZDW. Saturday 22nd, 2pm Aotea Square, I'll be there to watch live performances on the interactive outdoor dance floor and of course to hear from Parris Goebel! Make sure you head along to this one too.

2. Mixtape - Auckland

When you head up to Auckland for the NZDW Launch, leave a day early and head along to Corbans Estate Art Centre for Mixtape! Mixtape is a collaborative showcase of contemporary works from both Perri Exeter and Joash Fahitua. Now, I've been lucky enough to work with both of these talented choreographers at UnZipped, so I know that this performance is a must see! To book tickets email

3. Kids Hip Hop Fundamentals with Bboy Rush

Now technically this begins before NZDW but it finishes with a performance on launch day so I thought I would include it. He will be running workshops for 2 different age groups 6 - 8 yr olds
and 9 - 14 yr olds. Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st will be the Workshops and then participants will have the opportunity to perform their newly learnt moves at an event at the Tauranga Art Gallery for friends and family to attend at 2pm on Saturday April 22nd. For more information >> click here

4. Tauranga Dance-o-Mat

This years NZDW is all about the Dance-o-Mat and Creative Tauranga have put together an exciting line up to celebrate dance on Friday 28th 1-3pm. Head on down to the waterfront to watch local dance students show off their dance talents on the Dance-o-Mat. Performers include our very own BoPPA Dancers, Mount Dance Co. plus 6 other local dance groups. Did I mention there will be prizes?

5. Give Dance A Go in Katikati

Gaye Hemsley of Christina Productions is opening up her studio and giving you a chance to release your inner dancer! Head along to the Anglican Hall in Katikati on Saturday 29th April 2pm with a gold coin donation. For more information >> click here

6. BoPPA Kidz Dance Workshop

I wouldn't be doing my job properly if I didn't promote our own event! We're offering a crazy NZ Dance Week Workshop for Girls and Boys aged 5 years+ on Thursday 28th 4-6pm. Our own students voted and chose Ballet and Jazz, so come along and join us for 2 hours of dance for only $10.00. You can register here >> Sign Up

7. 30 Second Dance Challenge

Can't get to any events for NZDW, no problem you can still join in with the 30 Second Dance Challenge.

The idea is simple! Show your NZDW support by filming yourself, your friends, family, co-workers or your pets doing a jig for as little as 30 seconds. You can go as big you like – whether you organise a flash-mob or do a little dance in your living room. It’s all good! Share the video on your social media platforms and use #nzdanceweek2017. And while you're busy sharing, give DANZ a follow on Instragram

There is so much more happening around the country for NZDW head to the DANZ Website for more events or give me a follow on Instagram @thedanimiller for local NZDW updates!
